Law of Convenience

It was so magnanimous of the TamilNadu govt. to give a tax waiver for movies with Thamizh titles. I also admire our Chief Minister for being able to, till date, give speeches and converse without English influence. But, there are some anomalies unhandled and a good potential to tap.

It would be a wiser decision of the govt. if they extend this kind of tax waiver to TV/ Radio channels as well. First - The Channel name and then the channel programs. That would encourage channels like Sun TV, Sun News, Sun Music, Suryan FM, KTV, change their english names. It is important for the govt. to realize that in today's world, TV media has a bigger impact on the kids than the movie. Hence, Tamilicizing, TV channels and programmes become all the more essential.

Apart from creating a tight corner for Jaya TV to change the show titles like 'Mom and Me', 'jackpot', etc., It would also encourage Pepsi Ungal Choice, Hello kuttis, Comedy Time, etc. to change their titles.

It is high time the Sun TV stakeholders realize that they have some conspirators in their own board trying to create a controversy. While the board suggests good local language names for their Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada arms like Kiran, Surya, Udaya, Teja, they have been repeatedly suggesting anglicized names only for Thamizh - including Sumangali Cable Vision and Sun Cinema ( the discontinued channels). It could well be their competitor's plan.

Note: Thanks to tea session and Sriram for sharing this thought.

Tamilizing more elements of our daily life will make a big difference...... not in a few days, but in the long run of decaded/centuries....

It is sad to see the kids in my Bangalore flat speaking in English with each other.... Nobody knows and wants Kannada.

It is a bad trend according to me esp in the South...

coolkrishnan,
Though I agree with you that not using native language is a bad trend, I feel tamilicizing or forcing is not the right solution..

Create a passion and and let the language grow by itself will be a better approach

What is the point behind giving this waiver ???

1) For a moment, let us assume that it is valid ... They could have imposed a penalty on those with English titles ... This is from a revenue generation point of view ... Why do they want to give a subsidy which will decrease their revenue ... Is the TN govt. in a position to give subsidies now ?!?

2) What is the marginal value addition by encouraging Tamil titles ... How much of an impact is it going to have in changing the behavior or speaking patterns of Tamil people ?!?

3) If it does not work single handedly and has to be coupled with "something else" to be of any value, what is that "something else"?!?

4) Can we expect a further tax rebate if a movie does not have dialogues with English words in it ?!? Will the producers get some "cash back" if they use pure, unadulterated Tamil ?!?

I am not against ways and means to bring people back to Tamil. I am against ineffective ways of doing so.

Comments please ...

Naveenan,
You got me all wrong..My blog was a mockery on the whole idea.. I perfectly agree with you. It is not in the title at all.. actually, I was planning on a next blog to really analyse on the factors that could kindle a passion for Thamizh language.
